DAWN OF THE STAN

MJ Innocent

Lucy’s perfectly average Tuesday goes catastrophically sideways when her husband is mauled by what appears to be a zombie — albeit one moonwalking aggressively and shouting half‑remembered trivia about Michael Jackson’s chart positions. Before she can even process the absurdity of it all, her quiet cul‑de‑sac transforms into a nightmare: neighbours she once borrowed sugar from now shamble toward her in sequinned gloves, hissing “He was innocent” with the devotion of people who’ve spent far too long on internet forums.

These aren’t your run‑of‑the‑mill undead. These are Stans: single‑minded, sparkle‑obsessed zealots determined to convert the entire human race into an army of pop‑culture evangelists. Their bite doesn’t just infect — it compels victims to defend their idol with the intensity of someone who’s memorised every interview he ever gave and considers Wikipedia a personal battleground.

As Lucy scrambles to survive the spreading “Stan‑demic”, she uncovers its origins: a rogue fandom experiment gone wrong, a viral cocktail of nostalgia, denial, and weaponised parasocial attachment. With civilisation collapsing under the weight of increasingly unhinged fan edits, she must dodge hordes of undead superfans who can smell scepticism from half a mile away.

Fortunately, she’s not the only one refusing to join the glitter‑covered hive mind. Along her journey she meets a ragtag band of survivors — a former music journalist who once dared to write a three‑star review, a scientist who tried to warn the government about the dangers of unchecked fandoms, and a teenager who simply prefers other artists and has therefore been hunted relentlessly. Together, they trek across the country, seeking out the last pockets of rational thought left in Britain.

Through every close call — from escaping a flash‑mob ambush to resisting the hypnotic pull of a 12‑hour fan‑made documentary — Lucy clings to hope. She believes humanity can still be saved from the glittery jaws of obsession.

And when she finally reaches the end of her journey, Lucy discovers something profound: she hasn’t just survived the Stan apocalypse. She’s proved that even in a world overrun by undead superfans, one ordinary woman armed with common sense, sturdy footwear, and absolutely no patience for celebrity worship can make a stand — and maybe, just maybe, restore a bit of sanity to the world.
